Future Scottsdale Community College Climbing Club Awaits Council of Student Leaders Approval
Emma Brown has been trying to start a rock climbing club at Scottsdale Community College for nearly a year.
Brown, who began competing in indoor climbing events at age 10, worked with USA Climbing, the sport’s national governing body, to start a club at CSC.
The future club collected twice as many signatures as needed to qualify for club status, with around 20 students indicating they would be interested in joining.
Brown submitted the application for club status to CSC’s Student Leadership Council in late February, but is still awaiting the council’s decision.
Brown told NEVN that since rock climbing is such an intensive sport, the club would likely need to train three times a week and that the club’s biggest hurdle so far has been meeting the requirement for the school to find a pedagogical adviser who is ready to attend all. club meetings/workouts.
She hopes to found the new club at Phoenix Rock Gym, an indoor rock climbing facility in Tempe that is also home to the ASU Rock Climbing Club.
Due to the problem of faculty supervision during organized practices, Brown is working to develop home-based workouts and may have to rely on members completing fewer organized practices working one-on-one at the climbing center.
Brown said the club’s primary focus will be to train and prepare members for collegiate competition in three climbing disciplines; speed climbing, top-rope/lead climbing and bouldering. But, she pointed out that the club will also welcome members who want to join to learn more about recreational rock climbing safety or who want to participate for fun or fitness.
Eventually, the club hopes to have enough climbing equipment to be able to lend equipment to members. Until then, Brown said Phoenix Rock Gym offers rentals of equipment like harnesses and shoes that club members can use for about $5 per session, until they decide if they want to. buy their own equipment.
If the potential club is approved, Brown hopes to start regular training beginning next fall semester.
