Newfound Gap Road reopened after rockslide

Knoxville, Tenn. (WATE) – US Hwy 441 Newfound Gap Road between Gatlinburg and Cherokee, NC through Great Smoky Mountains National Park was temporarily closed due to a landslide Tuesday evening.

The National Park Service announced that the road reopened to all traffic at 3:30 p.m. Park officials said they received help from contractors to remove 50 meters of debris.

A park spokesperson said Wednesday morning that the road was closed due to debris and some rocks still falling near mile marker 13. The landslide occurred on the Tennessee side of the park just below the gap, according to a message from LeConte Lodge.

Newfound Gap Road has been closed from the intersection with Little River Road near the Sugarlands Visitor Center to Smokemont Campground Road. Access to Smokemont Campground remains open from the North Carolina side, the park said.

The National Park Service announced the closure at 9:20 p.m. Tuesday night on Twitter.
